Youth advocates have been speaking about the intergenerational injustice of climate change for at least the last three decades. Until 2018, scholarly conversations about climate justice featured surprisingly little mention of or input from youth climate advocates. Still, much existing research on youth climate activism has been focused on youth climate action in the Global North.
As youth authors and advocates like Vanessa Nakate have pointed out, there is a need for (geographically) broader and (historically) longer stories of youth climate advocacy. My research in this area aims to "expand the story" working in collaboration with youth climate advocates in communities and regions most impacted by climate change. Expanding the story both geographically and historically is critical to defining and actualizing intergenerational climate justice pathways.
In collaboration with the Arab Youth Climate Movement, Qatar, and youth research consultant Charles Mankhwazi, recent work has aimed to understand the experiences of youth climate advocates in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in the international policy process. We have recently published findings from this work in the journal Climate and Development.
